What also works is hang around the front of the line listening to the names of the promotors that have lists open for the night.  Then, when you have a few names, just say to the bouncer Im on XXXs list.  Of course, when they look at the list youre not going to be on it, so just insist that you spoke with XXX and he/she told you to look for him.  Drop a few other names if necessary, since in Hollywood, its all about name dropping.
